Mendelssohn and Schumann. Recognize these 19th-century composers? First names, Felix and Robert, right? Try Fanny and Clara.

Fanny Mendelssohn and Clara Schumann were also 19th-century composers, and, in the view of many, possessed as much promise as did Fanny’s famous brother, Felix, and Clara’s famous husband, Robert.

Like her brother, young Fanny composed music. But her family opposed attempts to publish her compositions, arguing that she couldn’t sustain a full-fledged creative career. A few of Fanny’s compositions were published, however. Under her brother’s name.
